• Test smoke alarms at least once a month
• Change the batteries when the time changes in the Spring and Fall
• Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years, following manufacturer's instructions
• PLan regular fire drills so everyone knows what to do when a smoke detector sounds
• Install smoke alarms on every level of your home
• Install smoke alarms outside every sleeping area

• Make a home escape plan and make sure everyone knows what to do and where to meet in the event of an emergency
• Choose an outside meeting place a safe distance in front of your home for everyone to meet, and ONCE YOU ARE OUT, STAY OUT!
• If you have infants, older adults, or family members with mobility problems, assign someone to assist them in the event of an emergency
• Practice your escape plan at least twice a year

• Use a portable extinguisher if the fire is contained to a small area, such as a waste basket, and is not growing.  Make sure everyone has exited the building, 911 has been called, and the room is not filling with smoke.
• To operate, remember the word PASS
  • Pull the pin
  • Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire
  • Squeeze the handle
  • Sweep nozzle from side to side
• Install extinguishers close to an exit, and NEVER let the fire get between you and an exit
• Know when to go--if the fire continues to grow, or the extinguisher is empty, GET OUT IMMEDIATLEY
